Leadership Ideas from Dr. Jim Benson

Dr. Jim Benson, Riverside Military Academy

Slightly more than two years ago, Dr. Jim Benson became President of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. Already his leadership has generated progressive changes–with more to come.

During his guest appearance in “The Communication Corner”–the program that I host weekly on WBCX-FM, “The Voice of Brenau,” with the vital assistance of co-host Kristina Rhoades–Dr. Benson explained his ideas about leadership and talked about RMA, including:

–Milestone events in the history of RMA
–Mission of the Academy
–Community service given by the cadets
–Value of athletics as a learning experience
–Why RMA launched a philanthropy program, and what it accomplishes
–His highly-decorated Marine Corps career
–Books he considers helpful for aspiring leaders
–How compliments improve individual and group morale

Valuable Training Tips from Linda Hensel

Training/Development Leader Linda Hensel

Linda Hensel made her second guest appearance in “The Communication Corner,” my Tuesday morning interview program on WBCX-FM, “The Voice of Brenau.” On her initial guest shot, she talked about maximizing your vocal skills. Her return interview focused on organizational training and development–a function she knows well as the Training and Development Specialist with the State Personnel Administration, based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Among the subjects Linda discussed:

–Why expenditures for training and development should not be reduced during tough economic times
–Major shifts in training strategies in the last two decades
–Advantages of having the organization’s leader participate in training sessions
–Dealing with shy participants and their opposites, excessive talkers
–Why shortened attention spans and current technology make interactive sessions more welcomed
–Including a review of “best practices” from other companies in your industry
–Fostering guidelines for ethical behavior
–Getting and using honest feedback from trainees
