Professional Counselor Discusses Workaholics and Balanced Lives

Some people think they will succeed by working 70 or more hours a week. Among those there are “grinders” who brag about their work ethic, while there are others who complain–yet keep that rigorous schedule going voluntarily.

Somehow workaholics remind me of a country song lyric:

“Work your fingers to the bone, and what do you get?”

“Bony fingers”

SLEEP DEPRIVATION
Closely aligned to the workaholics pattern are business leaders who get very little sleep at night, believing that they must start work as early as possible and keep working late into the evening.

NO VACATIONS
Related to thIS topic are individuals who don’t take vacations, even though their employer allows time away. You can only guess how horrified this group would be if someone suggested they take a sabbatical–several weeks or even two or three months away from work.

RISKS WORKAHOLICS FACE
Although an excessive work ethic might be admirable as a sign of commitment, people who never take time for themselves run the risk of damaging their mental and physical health, and possibly reducing their professional impact.

Audiences Want to Hear the Passion in Your Voice

Watch the interview above to hear what former CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin says she learned early in her career about effective speaking. Passion in your voice, she says, is what your audiences want. . .which doesn’t require reciting a script perfectly or pronouncing your words flawlessly.

You’ll hear my opening comments in the video noting that you need to master the skill of speaking to audiences, whatever your profession. Whether you’re in a leadership role now or aspiring to become a leader, being able to express your ideas clearly and compellingly is a must.
