Last week I met with one of the University of Georgia’s most outstanding football players in this era–Rennie Curran–at the delightful “Cream and Shuga” in Jefferson, GA. By football standards Rennie was an undersize college player, but by the record books he became an oversized achiever. As a linebacker for the Georgia Bulldogs, he broke through blockers to tackle surprised ball carriers. He amazed opponents with his speed, agility, and conditioning.
PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL
Entering the National Football League with the Tennessee Titans after achieving All American status his junior year, Curran seemed to “have it made.” He was realizing his dream of playing in the pros, making a salary he hadn’t imagined possible, and feeling secure. However, his team’s management changed, and he was released. He became what’s known as a “Free Agent,” a nice way of saying he was jobless.
Determined to continue his football career, he made his way into the Canadian Football League, where he plays with the Edmonton Eskimos.
INSTEAD OF DESPERATION, HE CHOSE INSPIRATION
Notice: When his circumstances changed drastically, he didn’t sink into bitterness and despair. In fact, he wrote an inspirational book titled, quite fittingly, “Free Agent.”
As a professional speaker, he stirs his listeners by telling how his parents came to America from war-torn Liberia, with his impoverished mother eventually becoming a nurse, and his father opening a shoe repair shop. Their example of courage under duress gave him the vivid example he needed when his football fortune disappeared.
In one of his speeches he assures us, “Failures don’t have to define you.” In fact, “they are there for a reason.” Curran advises those who are in “a place of uncertainty” to find true self confidence, self control, humility, and the value of family, relationships. and faith.
His picturesque way with words led him to ask: “Ever seen a casket with a U-Haul attached to it?”
