Monique Honaman’s Advice on Leadership and Communication

With HR Expert Monique Honaman

When I wanted “The Communication Corner” (my radio interview program on WBCX, “The Voice of Brenau”) to focus on Leadership and Communication, my guest list narrowed to one person–Monique Honaman, President/CEO of the ISHR group in Atlanta, Georgia. We became acquainted several years ago, and have stayed in touch since because of our mutual professional interests. When you listen to the audio, you will hear me provide part of her impressive credentials.

By listening to this audio, you will hear Monique’s advice about vital topics that every dedicated professional needs to be well informed about. Among our discussion items:

*The management style of legendary CEO Jack Welch of General Electric. Monique held leadership roles in GE for a decade during Welch’s time at the top

*How leaders can resolve conflicts among employees

*The HBDI instrument–how it helps people understand and adjust to communication styles unlike their own preferred style

*The vital role of listening skills among top-tier managers

*Why “small talk” really isn’t so small after all

*How extensively should leaders get involved in the Social Media?

*What we risk by reducing face-to-face training sessions and retreats

*The most effective way to break bad news to employees

*Why genuine compliments boost morale

*Maintaining a balanced life in the midst of our customarily frantic pace

Clearly, this audio will be well worth your 60 minutes. After hearing the guidelines Monique proposes, and putting them into action, you will enrich your communication skills–and become the leader you have wanted to be.

Monique is Still the “Energizer Bunny”

In September of 2006, I shared a dynamic lunch session with Monique Dearth Honaman. We had met at a networking event, and wanted to share our ideas about business communication. Shortly after our lunch discussion, I posted a blog about her, identifying her as the “Energizer Bunny.” Well, last week we shared lunch and conversation again–and I can tell you for sure. . .Monique is still the Energizer Bunny.

Monique launched Incite Strategies, Inc, in 1999, following a sterling ten-year career in GE’s HR division. In her words, she wanted “to leverage my corporate HR career, focus on my passion for Leadership Assessment and Development, and exercise my entrepreneurial spirit.” Her company gained prominent recognition. By 2004, the Atlanta Business Chronicle listed her among the 50 young rising stars in the city.

In 2006, Monique and her colleagues launched HR OptIn to provide HR project management services. HR OptIn “evolved into a highly unique service placing HR professionals on full-time, part-time, contract, and permanent basis.”

Now Incite Strategies and HR OptIn are blended together, forming the ISHR group. Check their Web site:

On the site, you’ll read: “We are passionate about our work. There’s an energy, a positive momentum, and a buzz about what we do. Our work has taken us across North and South America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and India. We have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Small Business, The New York Times, the NY Post, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, HR Executive and Pink Magazine, to name but a few. We have been recognized with awards from the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Enterprising Women, and Diversity Business.

In addition to her professional activities, she cares for her husband and two young children, and somehow creates time to volunteer in her church, professional organizations, school, and other causes.

In my judgment, Monique will face her ultimate, most demanding challenge next week. What’s that? She’ll start taking golf lessons, something she “has wanted to do for a long time.” Judging by her achievements in everything else she has attempted, my guess is that I wouldn’t want to tee it up against her a year from now, though I have been playing since I was thirteen years old. Somehow, I expect the “Energizer Bunny” will become the maven of the fairways quite soon.
