Widely respected sportscaster Bob Neal added another honor to his impressive credentials when his alma mater, Northern Illinois University, awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Journalism, named after Dr. Donald Grubb, founder of the NIU journalism program 55 years ago. Neal remembers his professor very fondly.
Also in the photo: Dr. Grubb’s widow Ruby, and daughters Karen and Virginia.
A humorous note: During the awards, Bob displayed a paper he had written for Dr. Grubb that prompted a grade of F–because of misspellings. Bob said that just wasn’t allowed in print journalism, and the failing grade taught him a valuable lesson for his career.
